Part-Time Administrative & Outreach Coordinator
REPORT To
Executive Director, Spirit Lake Youth Sports
LOCATION
Spirit Lake Nation, North Dakota. On-site at SLYS HQ Building as well as various events around the community to be determined.
SCHEDULE
Part-time and event-driven. Roughly 10-12 hours per week averaged over the year, with heavier weeks during Spring & Summer Months (May–September) and lighter weeks in winter. Evening and weekend availability may be required during event season on case by case basis.
COMPENSATION
$18-20 per hour depending on experience. Paid on the SLYS payroll schedule with taxes withheld; SLYS pays the employer share of payroll taxes. This position does not include health insurance, retirement, or paid leave.
STATUS
​W-2 employee of Spirit Lake Youth Sports. Part-time, non-exempt, at-will. This is not a contractor or 1099 position.
FUNDING
Funded by the NB3 Foundation Water First! II Community Action Grant. The grant period runs through November 30, 2028; continuation past each grant year depends on renewed funding.

About This Position
Spirit Lake Youth Sports is striving to build innovative and wellness programs on Spirit Lake — projects range from our new Fieldhouse, a 28-acre walking park - Wellness Corridor , and assist with improvements to the Pow Wow grounds — and making sure that safe, free, good-tasting water is available everywhere our families gather. That work is funded by a 2.5-year grant from the NB3 Foundation, and it carries two messages: Water: First for Thirst for families and elders, and Hydrate Your Hustle for our young athletes.

This position is the face of that work on the ground. The Coordinator is the person our community actually sees — at the hydration table at Fort Totten Days, at the Food Distribution Program on a Tuesday morning, at the finish line of the Fry Bread 5k handing a kid a water bottle and asking what they think about it.
We are looking for someone from the SLN community, who knows people here, and who people here already trust. That matters more to us than a résumé. The rest can be taught.
What you will do
Community Outreach and Event Presence

Set up, staff, and break down the SLYS hydration table at 4–6 Spirit Lake Nation events each year, including Fort Totten Days, plus SLYS-sponsored events such as Wellness Runs.

Distribute water, hydration materials, pledge cards, and Hydrate Your Hustle gear, and talk with people about our mission and why water first matters.

Transport, organize, and maintain event supplies — tents, coolers, signage, branded cups, and giveaway inventory.

Represent SLYS respectfully at every event, following protocol and the direction of the SLN leadership.
Partner Site Collaboration

Coordinate and staff outreach tables at the Spirit Lake Food Distribution Program, the WIC program, and CCCC Head Start and or other sites tbd.

Schedule visits with partner staff, confirm dates in advance, and keep those relationships warm and consistent.

Reach families with infants and young children — the group most at risk from early exposure to sugar-sweetened drinks.
Listening, Surveys, and Evaluation

Conduct short intercept surveys with community members at events and partner sites.

Help organize and host e listening sessions.

Record responses accurately and completely, and turn them in on schedule — this data is what the NB3 Foundation and the Tribal Council will see.

Collect community stories, quotes, and photos (with signed consent) that show what is changing.
Youth Hydration Champions Program

Administer the Hydrate Your Hustle pledge: explain it, sign youth up, and keep the record of who has pledged.

Distribute incentive gear — water bottles, shirts — and track inventory so we do not run out mid-season.

Support recognized Champions as they become peer ambassadors in their own schools and families.
Administrative Support

Maintain the outreach calendar and event sign-in sheets.

Collect and turn in receipts and expense documentation for every purchase made on behalf of the project. Grant-funded purchases require a receipt, every time.

Keep signed photo and story consent forms organized.

Submit a short monthly activity report to the Executive Director: events attended, people reached, surveys collected, pledges signed, supplies needed.
Communications Support

Send photos, quotes, and story leads to the SLYS marketing partner for use in campaign materials and on the SLYS website.

Give feedback on draft materials so the messaging sounds like Spirit Lake and not like an outside agency.
What We Are Looking For
REQUIRED
-
Established relationships in the Spirit Lake community and comfort starting conversations with people of all ages, from small children to elders.

High school diploma or GED.

Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel to sites across the reservation.

Availability on evenings and weekends during Spring & Summer seasons.

Basic computer and smartphone skills: email, taking and sending photos, filling in simple forms or spreadsheets. We will train on anything specific.

Dependability with paperwork — surveys turned in, receipts kept, reports submitted on time.

Able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds (coolers, supply bins, tent bags), stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in variable North Dakota weather.

Successful completion of a background check, as required for work involving youth.
PREFERRED

Enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Tribe or another federally recognized tribe.

Familiarity with Dakota culture.

Prior experience in community health, outreach, youth programming, event work, or customer service.

Comfort with social media and photography.
The Kind of Person Who Does Well in This Job
Someone who is genuinely glad to see people. Someone who follows through on the small stuff — the sign-in sheet, the receipt, the survey that gets turned in Monday instead of next month. Someone who can stand in the heat at a Pow Wow for six hours and still be friendly at hour five. Someone who wants the kids here to grow up healthier than we did.
What Success Looks Like
These are the benchmarks we will use in your first year. They come directly from what SLYS committed to the NB3 Foundation.

First 90 days: hired and oriented, introduced to staff at Food Distribution, WIC, and Head Start, and present at your first community event with a working hydration table.​

Year one: hydration tables hosted at 4–6 community events plus partner-site visits; intercept surveys collected at each; the Hydrate Your Hustle pledge introduced and Champions recorded; monthly reports submitted on time.

Ongoing: community members recognize you, know what SLYS is doing, and know where to find free water at every gathering on Spirit Lake.
